Hi
My family (including 2 teenagers) are going to Northern Spain July/Aug 2006 for 2 weeks surfing/beach holiday.
Please can anyone recommend the best places to surf for beginners and the best place to camp as we don't know the area?

The whole Santander area seem to be real nice. You did not say how long you were planing to stay.
There are many summer Apartments in the area, that owners rent from weeka or the whole summer, depending on your need, but you most communicate with them in Spanish.I understand that the whole north coast is like that.
I stayed in Noja (two blocks away from the beaches), which is close for the winter, but in the summer it is happening. There are numerous beaches in that area, most of them with yellow color sand.

Playa de Meron and liencres have good camping and nice uncrowded beaches if you want to get away from the hectic city life.

There's a really nice camping in Zarautz (which is a great beach to learn). Close to San Sebastian (beautiful place). I went last month there and it was great.

Hello,
Playa de Meron at San Vicente de la Baquera is a good place
to stay. There is a good camp ground approx. 200m from the beach, which is good for beginners. The city is approx. 1,5km
away but has some nice restaurants and bars to entertain the teenagers.

Loredo is great. Totaly unspoilt great beach. Been there twice now and returning again in May06. My advice is take a look at surfdamos.com and contact Damian. He has a great setup with camping also and gives fantastic tuition. Do it, you'll have a great time.

Check out vayacamping.net You can change the language in the top right hand corner. The whole of the north of Spain is gorgeous and the places other people have mentioned are spot on. With 2 teenagers I'd have to say Zarautz, Pais Vasco would be a good bet. Lots of surf shops, good nightlife and the view from the campsite is great or if you've got a car, Cabo Mayor in Santander is a 10 minute bus ride into town and the beaches, but within 20 minutes car drive west to some beautiful beaches such as Liencres. But, if you want to be close to the mountains (and maybe see some bears) and beach check out Ribadesella or San Vicente de la Barquera.....too many choices!!!

Camping El Rosal, You can also rent cabins. The surfschool is owned by a french guy, speaks good english, he can arrange logding. Very sympathic, not expensive. Great holiday ! See www.surfspirit.com |

I have been to Spain quite a few times on travel, but I have never go for surfing. Is it intereting? I think once you're in Spain, you can't miss costal del sol ( www.costadelsolspain.org ) where you can enjoy a comfortable sunbath and barcelona ( www.gobarcelona.biz ) where you can taste the really beautiful sandy beach. I love them all. Next time I travel to Spain, I must go to try surfing. When I'm back, I will tell you my feeling. Hope everyone have a good time in Spain! |
