Best Beginner Surf Spots during FebruaryMarch/April

My wife and I will be visiting Australia/Japan/New Zealand in 2014 and I would like to surf while in Australia.  I'm 41 years old and am relatively new to the sport.  I live in Florida where the surf is very weather dependent.  I'm hoping to get some tips on places that have consistent, well shaped waves that don't break right on the shore, preferrably sandy bottoms, and mostly friendly surfers.

Thanks for your help!

You don't indicate if you intend to ride a shortboard or longboard.
I feel Scotts Head could be a good place for you.
