Hi. I'm heading to Australia myself and I can say that guides such as lonely planet are excellent to find places to stay, eat, and even for transportation info or hear about places cool to hang out at. Hope this helps.

A buddy of mine stayed at Avalon for awhile and I visited and thought it was good there for travellers cause they had a posting in the lobby for local people who needed work done and would just pay cash at the end of the day type deal, or as with most hostels, you could sort out some work for the hostel if you're really strapped. It's not right at the beach (maybe a 3 minute walk) but for you girls that like surfing (or at least the guys that do it) you get to watch K Slater there every now and again.
