I am a yankee from new england and studied at UQ for a year. You are really close to some of the best surfing spots in the world. You have the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast (i.e. Burleigh, etc) very close by. I used to either catch a ride with my boys or I would take a bus and a train. Either way its easy and prepare to surf some of the best waves of your life.
As to finding the spots, you can do the research or ask some locals. And contrary to its name, Surfer's Paradise has shitty beachbreack surf, keep going down the coast.good luck....

hey sup i'm a canuck but i lived down in aus last year. brissy's got nothing for surf, you'll have to take weekend trips to the gold coast. hit the bruce highway south and you'll be in surfer's paradise in 1 hour - the actual town, not a heavenly realm. um, don't do downtown surfer's, and skip broadbeach too. hit up burleigh head's, that where i lived, and its consistant if you dont want to risk wasting a weekend on no swell. also, surf snaps. that's snapper rocks. if you can say you've surfed snaps, you've done well.
ps - brissy is fun, beautiful city. too bad no surf.

I go to UQ. It's not in downtown Brisbane, it's in St Lucia. It's about an hour to the gold coast (or 2 by public trans) and 2 hours to Noosa and the Sunshine coast. Check out Wollongong Uni or Bond uni on the gold coast (it's about 15 minutes to Burleigh and Kirra etc.). UQ's a cool place though. A lot of people here surf so just get rides from them.

I am also going to UQ for a semester. This isn't really surf related but how are the girls there and is there much of a night life in brisbane?
