Surf spots near Port Hedland or Mackay

We'll possibly be immigrating to Oz but seems my sponsorships will land me in either Mackay or Port Hedland, any waves in the area?

Port Hedland for surf = Hours and hours of travel, lots of time, money and luck.  Never been to Mackay, but I'm guessing that surf in Mackay = a boat, lots of time, money and luck!?!

Mackay is inside the Great Barrier Reef. Nothing worth surfing here. Kite Surfing & Windsurfing are the closest alternative as the trades (SE) blow hard all summer. Watch out for the poisonous jellyfish (Box and Irukandji) though.

there are fun little waves, take a fish or a slightly wider short board. the locals will help you out where and when to go. wind swell only. north wall at the northern end of the harbour is the pick. cyclone swells here are amazing on the uncrowded right hand points!!!!!!!!1

I grew up surfing in Mackay.  YOu only get waves when there is wind (> 20 knts) for at least a day or so.  Luckly, there is often a lot of wind.  Expect waves < 4 foot, and often a bit fat.  But, it is worth the effort.

I'm thinking of relocating to Mackay as well, how long would it take to drive a tinny or runnabout out to the reef to surf?
