how to get up?

« on: May 12 2007 06:05:00 »

I've always been a land lover sports person and I just discovered the thrill in water sports. I took a few lessons and have been reading up online but I can't get when I should start paddling and when should stand up on the board. Any advice?

Take the time to watch the experienced surfers and note where they position themselves and where they paddle to just before takeoff on a wave. Generally u want to be just on or in front of the shoulder of the wave (the bit where its breaking) Also start off on a bigger board, maybe 7ft if u are 6ft tall. The time to stand up is when u feel yourself sliding down the wave and try to angle left or rite, this can take a bit of time to get the hang of and really is only mastered thru practice. Surf more reef breaks than beach breaks at the beginning and Good Luck - tis the best sport in the World!!
