I like this thing ( God spot ?)
I'm in Byron this morning and yesterday morning I was around surf spots north of Kempsey.
I feel like Byron is like a God spot today with the rain etc. but sure not at other times.

forget Melbourne, also Brisbane, just an hour from Brisbane is the famous Gold Coast, big city with some points and lots of beachbreaks. Public transport will get you to most spots but the points are super crowded and the beachbreaks are onshore all day, everyday. Good luck. Best weather and nightlife in Australia though but I still hate the joint. try also Wollongong NSW, less crowded, big city south of Sydney, trains will take you to all spots. Cheap motel rent by the month- Cabbage Tree Creek Motel, Fairy Meadow

Yeh GC is good, but crowds are massive like everywhere else. GC is really a shit hole tho. I recon the guy above is on it. Woolongong is the spot. Beautiful mountains back onto the sea; its a pretty scenic place, Sydney is about 45-60min away. Plus the waves they get there are heavy on the right swell, and it picks up alot of it. Melbourne is a rad city, the best in oz. But surf is ages and ages away. If you do go to melbs you've gota hike an hour minimum to find surf, cos melbs is at the top of a bay full of nothing but shit. Of course Victoria is a sweet place to surf - we get some mamoth swells, but it is wetsuits all year round. you gota surf it tho - Kilkunda, Gunna, Bells, Winki. its all good shit. We dont have the crowds like the GC does either.

the GC can keep its crowds, it attitude etc. Whilst i agree melbourne is cold, you can still find an empty wave, which in this world is a rareity, its offhsore somewhere every day.
so head north for crowds, head south for soul.
