Which is the closest surf beach to melbourne (in distance and in time) No matter quality.

depends on where you live in melbourne....
western or northern suburbs - probably 13th beach or ocean grove
eastern or south eastern suburbs - rye/gunnamatta...
living in melbourne you are spoilt for opportunity eg- if its easterly you can go to the island etc and get plenty of waves, westerly go to the west coast...
Because of that I rarely surf an onshore wave-sweet....

I think St Kilda is the closest to the city. I love the trams in Melbourne but tried to live in the place for 3 months and couldn't really handle the place.
It may have it's alternate culture somewhere but I couldn't find it. It wasn't really the friendliest of places.
Make the best of antwhere and you get something.

i surf at ocean grove and 13th pretty regular, i used to live in st kilda and it takes about 1 hour leaving at a good time of the day, 6.00am or so.

hang about, i surfed the bay 2-3 weeks back on a 40 knot north westerly. 2 metre right handers peeling ever so sweet. walked up the peir and jumped in caught my waves to shore walked up the pier and so forth. no paddling out. no one out there but me.where is it?if i told you you wouldnt believe and i hope you dont find out1

possos is the closest from the west gate.exactly 65 minutes if no traffic.
