West beach is probably your best bet, it gets some real groundswell which none of the other metro beaches do. Theres three spots around there really, out in front of the sls club, and a left hander and right hander which work of the south and north sides of the marina. Look out for WSW swell direction that seems to line up best at westies. Check the mid coast surf forecast and if it has swell over 2ft westies is a pretty safe bet, providing the swell direction isnt too southerly. Apart from this the main waves we get are stormys. For this you need very strong onshore winds. Wave quality is very variable, SW to W winds are needed 20knots plus...bom.gov.au has the details. Henley is the best for it.
