Ratshit bay. It's about an hour north of cairns. Actually called Ellis beach. Coming into the cyclone season, so you might get some pussy, ratshit waves. Worth getting wet. Watch out for the stingers and crocs though.

YEP, HEAPS OF SPOTS, YOU JUST HAVE TO HAVE LOCAL KNOWLEDGE OF WINDS, TIDES & REEF CHANNELS. THE REEFS EAST OF GREEN ISLAND ALL GET GOOD IN VARIOUS SWELL DIRECTIONS. HEARS A HOT TIP SNAPPER ISLAND & LOW ISLES REEFS. (NORTH OF PORT DOUGLAS AND SOUTH OF CAPE TRIBULATION)
AND IF YOU LOOK FURTHER NORTH AGAIN TRY LIZARD ISLAND FOR A MIXTURE OF REEF PEAKS.
THE SWELL SNEAKS THROUGH A FEW GAPS IN THE OUTER REEFS.

I gave up surfing when I moved to cairns as there are no surfable waves on the mainland. have a look at a map of cairns reefs here , http://www.visitcairns.com.au/maps.htm, I think there is a map of thw whole reef.
i don't know about barrier reef surfing spots as I've not got a big enough boat to get there, but I've never seen a worth riding wave on the mainland.

There are a couple of spots. One in Cairns and one north of Port Douglas.
You can find more info about surfing in Cairns here.
