Need information for an upcoming trip

« on: December 26 2005 09:12:00 »

I am going to Barbados in January. I need a local surf map, and some insight on how I can find the best size and glassy surf. I am very experienced however, I have someone going with me that is not and need some sandy beach breaks for them.
THank you

alright...the whole island is awesome. ur going i  jan so the surf i think is slightly bigger then. east of the island is the best with soup bowls more northern being ur best bet for quality, whilst more southern u have a number of smaller beach breaks....just cruise it and you can jump out and look. u can drive the whole island in like 45 mins so its pritty sweet. on the west of the island u got some nice breaks....duppies being 1 but im thinkin they break less consistently!

anyways enjoy, wicked place...pumpin surf i was there in sept last year loved it!! hang wit the reggae dudes at soup bowls...happy dayz!!

Hey there, searching myself for an upcoming surf trip. Thinking about DR. I was in Barbados one November. Unless there's some distant groundswell, your best bet is in Bathseba. That's where Soup Bowls and a few other waves are, I forget their names. Reef bottom and urchins, paddle out where the fresh water streams come into the ocean and you should be fine. There are trade winds daily, usually offering a wave everyday. can get really crowded with groms. The carribbean side will only break when you get wrap around swells. If you're staying in Bathseba, there's really no night life, you'll have to drive to the other side for entertainment. Go to your local surf store and ask them to print you a copy of the surf reports. They contain detailed maps with break descriptions. Have fun.

Hey Chris, thanks for the tips. Travelling down on my own after a one week working stint in NY; is there much of a surf social scene or social scene? Was hoping to meet some like minded boarders for post session beers, but it seems any of the surfing apartments availiable are extremely expensive and surely must therefore only attract couples and well off corporate types. Did u find this the case when you where there in Sept?

Soup Bowls on the east coast would be a tough spot to start out at!!  Surfed for over 20 years and it is one of the thickest waves I have ever surfed.  Caught waves everyday on the southwest coast near bridgetown close to a light house. Heading back this year in Apr myself.  Most of the locals folks are real helpful!!  Found this place just by asking and the guy drove 20 minutes to show me two different breaks!!

You where right Kev. Just got back from two week trip. Surf was excellent both at South Point and Freights 15mins drive from St Lawerance Gap. Best surf, for my level, experienced beginner I think I have ever been in. Will be warm in April - where do u intend to stay, the accomodation was a little pricey? Gotta hop, Phil

looking for a place to stay as well and hoping to avoid the corperate types too.  any suggestions?  have never been to barbados before and am a beginner-intermediate surfer.  definately prefer the laid back trip over the stuffy resorty places.  where is the best area/hotels to stay?
