I've been talking to a new zealander that has a surf camp in barra da tijuca. what i hear it sounds like the place to get consistent surf with a good nightlife.

Yeh, there´s a new surf camp being set up just south of Rio by a Kiwi girl called Kat. I´ve taken a couple of lessons with her and she was really good.
Unforunately I haven´t got her number on me, but I think there´s a website in the pipeline - have a search. Alternatively you could ask at the big hostels in Copacobana or Ipanema. Certainly if you walk into Mellow Yellow in copacobana they´ll put you in touch with her.
