I'm also looking for the best place to surf in Brazil in June! Anywhere north of Rio. Many thanks!

june is one of the best months for waves here in Brasil.
Here in the south, the average temperature is between 12 - 20 celcius degrees (wich is cold for Brazilians as me).
From Rio de Janeiro to the North there´s no real winter in Brazil, just some rain and temperatures from 24- 30 degrees.
Some of the best surf spots here in Brazil are located at the north shore of São Paulo (Litoral Norte as we call it). Beaches like Maresias, Camburi, Baleia (located at the city of São Sebastião - SP) are very famous here and you can find some diferent kind of waves for diferent levels of surfers. The best place to stay is at some simple hostels near the beaches that we call "Pousadas". You´ll find place to stay from 15 to 25 U$ for a couple with breakfast.

Going North you have the north shore of Rio de Janeiro, in cities like Saquarema, Arraial do Cabo you´ll find lots of good waves, the water there is much colder than in São Paulo.
Going North you have a city called Guarapari at Espirito Santo that have some good waves, good food, warm weather and warm water. The prices here are probably cheaper than the others. Going north you´ll find Itacaré in the south of Bahia, a tropical paradise, a small city with beautifull beaches, rain forest, good waves but a lot of people.
Pay atention to the distances here in Brazil, the average distance from each one of these cities I mentioned is something like 500 kilometers. The roads here are not very good and we don´t have cheap internal flights here.

I am going in late July and will be based in Santos for 2 weeks. Is that a good location to surf in July?

Santos itself is no good, but just across the channel there is Guaruja which is pretty good.Just get the ferry and a short bus ride to Pitangueiras ou Praia do Tombo. If you have a car go check Sao Pedro, about 30KM from the main beaches of Guaruja, always less crowded during the week, but not on weekends.
