in natal you can look for praia da pipa, there´s some beachbreaks and a reef break in the area, and itacare there´s a lot of spots(tiririca, itacarezinho, engenhoca ... ).
you can buy a used surf board(a good one) for something like USD 150 or a lit more. but has boards starting at USD 50...

I've been in Itacaré and Natal. Itacaré have flawless surf and is cheaper than Natal. Keep in mind that almost all beaches in Itacaré can be reached by foot or cab. Everything surfing beach is around.
In April you should get good waves. Don't miss the Engenhoca beach. In a sunny day with no wind you should get glassy surf there.
Be aware to Pontal Beach. In certain seasons you would find some sharks, Jellyfish and big fishes. Do not hesitate asking the locals where the surf is up.

hey there are many beach breaks, good fun , I grew up in Rio and surfed the entire state. There is even a surf bus available to take you around the beaches. Best time to surf down there is spring, winter, and fall, summer time usually has very small waves, I am talking about Rio which is in the south east. I hope that you have a nice trip and enjoy it. Keep in touch if you need more info okay.
