Surfing spots in Winnipeg ???« on: September 20 2006 12:09:00 »
This morning the Radio 1 CBC show with Sheila Rogers featured an excellent segment on Habitat67 in Montreal. What - Montreal? They say you can surf continuously for over an hour. Anyway, it was pointed out that there's a spot in Winnipeg (what?!) on one of our rivers. That can't be right, unless the guy interviewed was referring to Lockport, where there are rapids by the locks. Does anyone know where one can surf in Winnipeg? -- Dirk, Winnipeg

I surf on rivers in Alberta and its a rush. First thing is contact local kayak shops for play spots or standing waves. Or get online and search kayak play spots in your province. I have heard that there is wind swell on Lake Winnipeg too. Watch for low pressure systems that move and explore the opposite coast that it is coming from. Cheers.

Did you get any other tips or find anything? There's a chance I'll be moving to Winnipeg, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to get in the water at all other than flying home to San Diego. Right now I'm working in Halifax, where I can surf pretty regularly. Any searching I've done online turns up photos of people in dry suits, sometimes with snow in the background... not that appealing since it's freshwater. Thanks!

Yes we do have several spot to surf. Good thing is that there are very few paddlers in Winnipeg, so the line ups are few. Check out playak.com for directiions.

man I've lived in winnipeg my whole life and there's no surf here ! it's the prairies. You'd be lucky to catch a little wind chop on a 10 ft board.

For sure we can surf here. Lake Winnipeg can get big. Vic Beach is great with N-NW wind. North basin is awesome. there is 400km of fetch. watch your winds and get out there. If river surfing is your thing, check out Sturgeon Falls or Scary Wave on the Winnipeg River. BEWARE Scary can have 10-15 ft face, but very fast flowing, and deep. 120 ft deep. Down time very frightening...
