Average height of Waves on Lake Winnipeg?

« on: April 21 2009 21:04:00 »

Can anyone tell me what would the average height of the waves on Lake Winnipeg during the winter and or August to October. I am doing a article on operation of Tugs and barges on Lake Winnipeg and require general wave conditions for th eperiod of a year and if there was any years in th epassed that had exception wave heights.

Thank You in Advance!

Hi Barry,
My info is not official.Long-duration NW/SE high wind events north basin waves to 6.5 m. 5 m. in the S basin Regular strong winds often produce 1.5 to 3 metre waves in the south basin. Average wave height? I'd guess that the fall average would be just under one metre. Winter? - the lake freezes all the way across mid Nov. in a cold year, or the 3rd week in Dec. in a warm year. By the end of Feb, ice is between 1.2 and 2 metres thick.  The ice breaks up in April.
