Looking for a cheap/safe place to stay while surfing in CR« on: November 12 2005 22:11:00 »
Any info on cheap accomodations in Costa Rica near quality surf would be appreciated. I don't really need a/c or fancy beds. A hammock in a safe place would suit me just fine. Please share if you have any experience with this. Thx.

There are a lot of hostils in the Jaco/Hermosa area. I'm sure there are some in tamriendo too. Fischer bros. has a hostil that they run in Hermosa. It's right on the beach or at least walking distance and you are at a surf shop. I believe they are pretty reasonable. I don't have the website with me, but if you google fischer bros costa rica you could probably find it. There are some in Jaco too, but in Jaco you could probably even find a hotel. They have $15-25 a night hotel rooms. Everything in Jaco is walking distance and if you don't feel like walking, you can take a cab anywhere in town for about a dollar. I don't know how much you are looking to spend but there are a lot of options. Tamriendo has hotel rooms with ac that fit three people for around $60.

I really like Cabinas Los Olas in Playa Avellanas. It's affordable and nice, with a good restaurant and bar. Staff is very nice too. Avellanas has alot of fun beach & pt breaks. The experts will enjoy Playa Negra down the road. Lola's on the beach has great, affordable food (ie the pizza) and has hammocks, a bar, and benches.
Tamarindo is close by if you want shopping and a night life. I would recommend a 4x4 because there are three rivers you have to cross to get to Avellanas from Tamarindo.
Have fun. Can't wait to go back to CR myself.

I just got back from a suring trip in CR. *Tamarindo - Backpackers Hostel, 6 person bunk rooms with a communal kitchen/bathrooms and living space, laundry service. Closest hostel to the beach. $10 a night. Surfboard racks and lockers in all rooms. *Mal Pais(Santa Teresa) - Brunelas - 4 person bunk rooms, free coffee/toast all day, 20 sec. from beach, communal kitchen and living space, laundry service. Board racks and tons of DVDs, party every night. My favorite place I stayed in CR! $9 night *Playa Hermosa (south of Jaco) - Rancho Grade- Private rooms and showers, communal kitchen, pool table, 30 sec. from beach. Board rentals, laundry. $10 night

Stay out of Jaco and Tamagringo, they are dumps. Only go there if you need a new stick or a lay. Just go out and get some waves along the open coast, pura vida style.

playa hermosa is a beautiful place to stay with great surf. i have been there often wihtin the last 3 years staying months at a time. 2 places i recommend are rancho grande 10$ a night and brisa del mar around 15-30$ a night. the hotels are on the beach and are a 5 min taxi ride from town(jaco). hermosa breaks almost year round with the best months being april-july.
