Blaine~ Jaco is a cesspool and I wouldn't go there unless you have a good reason....be aware of thiefs who will steal anything and everything you have from your locked rent a car or hotel room while you're out. (Standard travel tip)
Hermosa is ok and there are good waves in the area, but depending upon what time of year you go, there are great reefs and beachbreaks north and south...seriously, be careful in Jaco!

surfed in Jaco in Feb. Stayed away from the main area, went to the far south. Surfed there, great for longboarding, beginning surfers. It's where all the surf schools go. Check out Carton Surf Shop. He's awesome, will help with whatever you need, can even leave your car there with him to watch.
Go to Hermosa for better waves and waves to yourself. Or better yet go down to Esterillos for the best waves in the area.
