Canadian girl looking for wicked surf in costa rica or nicar« on: April 12 2007 18:04:00 »
So there are four of us girls landing in liberia mid may... we are all althetes and are convinced that we will pick up surfing quite quickly.... (i know, perhaps they are high hopes... but part of learning is determination right?) Anyways we were probably going to backpack into nicaragua in order to avoid the resorts and beach side casinos etc. However we also want to get our toes wet in some surf.... any suggestions of places to check out?

Tamarindo is not too far from the liberia airport and has an abundance of rentals and lessons available. Easy rivermouth wave to learn on......might be worth a look.

If you don't mind a few tourists, I also suggest Tamarindo. I'm from Calgary but I've been in "Tamagringo" for a couple of months now. Some good surf schools and some great waves. Also there are airport transfers from Liberia. Send me an email if you want, I may still be here when you arrive.

Sure you can learn pretty fast but you won't catch the face of a wave or be able to drop in on head high waves. It took me about 6 months to catch the face of a wave. Not telling you should not try cause just being out there is awesome just have patience and keep working at it.

You should go to Playa Hermosa, at the Central Paciic, there you will find really wicked surf!
Also if you want surf lessons and rentals, there is Fischer Bros Surfboards www.fbsurfboards.com thats a great surfshop and factory, this guys give surf lessons, rentals and make custom surfboards, great attention BTW!

I agree with the above poster .. go to Hermosa ... just south of Jaco. My daughter has been 3 times and loves it (age 23). She is there now with www.jimhogansurfcamp.com and she learns more in a day with him than in a wk with other camps. He was the World Longboard Champ in 95/96 .. on the tour for 10yrs. Most his clients are repeat, which is testament to how good he is.. kinda of a legend down there... everyone knows him. And for a girl, it couldn't be a safer person to be with. Surfing is hard to pick up. This is her 4th camp and this time she is there for 2 wks, but is finally getting 'the rides of her life'. If you want to see what the waves look like there each day, look at www.rovercam.com or if you want a report on the waves, Jim writes one daily on surfline.com
