Where in Hermosa are you staying? You should check out the Hotel Villa Hermosa. It is a great place. For about $40/night you get your own Cabina with kitchenette. The staff that work there are great and there is a nice beach break outfront the hotel.

Public buses or private buses. If private, do you have contact information to schedule?

How easy is it to travel on the bus with surfboards? I would prefer to do this since it is cheap, but if it is a hassle I'd be fine dropping down 60 dollars for a cab. Also are busses to Jaco easy to catch from the airport?

in Costa Rica, there are 2 places called playa hermosa - one is close to coco beach (near tamarindo), the other is more south on the nicoya peninsula and is known as playa hermosa de cobano.
obviously, there are different options how to get there.
I think all the posts here tells you how to get to playa hermosa in the north. If you want to head for playa hermosa de cobano, you must first arrive in Puntarenas and switch for the ferry. At the other side, there are busses for Cobano and further.
