Opinions of Mal Pais« on: July 11 2007 08:07:00 »
I'm thinking about taking a trip to Mal Pais sometime in August - October this year, and am wondering if it's suitable for my skill level. I've been surfing for a long time, but have been living inland for the past five years and have only surfed on (infrequent) trips.
Does Mal Pais have a range of breaks (i.e. for different skill levels), or is it for experts only? And is it crowded during August - October?
Thanks for your help.

Will probably be uncrowded as it is the off-season. Great wave, almost always surfable, my wife is a beginner and she surfs it with me. Can go up the coast and find some smaller and cleaner stuff if you want. I highly recommend it, go for it.

I'm here at the moment and it has been really messy and quite windy. Having said that, the place is great and really relaxed. People are lovely and it's much cheaper than Tamarindo. I am having a blast and I'm sure waves get better and I just got a couple of bad days... Great place to see.
Ben, I am going to be staying in playa Hermosa from Sunday (22nd) so if you are still up for meeting up in Jaco, let me know. You can email me - firstname.lastname@example.org.

Heading to Mal Pais area in January(I am 52) with my daughter(age 22). Looking for best spot to stay(about 1 wk). She wants to surf (has been to Hermosa near Jaco on 2 other trips). She would be better than beginner, not yet intermediate. Either hotel with other surfers or surf camp. Has anyone had any experience. As well, what beaches should we see and what restaurants etc should we not miss?? After, I will drop her off back at Jaco/Hermosa for a couple of weeks when I head back home. Not looking for a real expensive holiday either.

And once I am there do you need a car to get around to beaches?? Is there a car rental agency there are do I have to get the car from SJO before I leave the airport. Was thinking might fly over to save time.
