If you are in Tamarindo, go north tp Playa Grande for great surfing and leather back turtles laying eggs in Feb.  Go south to Playa Nigra for some fast powerful hollow surfs.  Further south there are Norsara, San Miguel (Awesome , powerful beach break- empty line-up) and of course M.P at the tip of Gunacaste.

Tamarindo is quite tourist saturated, but will have everything you need. do some home stays with the locals is cheap and great interaction with Ticos culture.

The Cloud Forest in Monteverte(sp?) is great, stayed at the H.I in Santa Elena, great peeps and good place to meet other travelers.

Good luck, enjoy and don't destroy

When I was in El Salvador last April another surfer told me the Carribean coast was excellent in February.  Can anyone confirm that?  I know for the west coast it will be pretty flat most everywhere because the southern hemi is at its quietest in Feb.  Only spots with NW exposure will pick up swell on the pacific coast.  I may be going down in Feb.

I wouldn't say that it is flat at all on the Pacific side at that time of year or any time.  Check out www.rovercam.com and you will see the daily surf report.  We were there in March the first time, Feb the second time and we are going in Jan this year.  Rovercam takes it's shots from Hermosa Beach near Jaco (don't be confused as there are 3 Hermosa Beaches in CR).  Surfers tend to hoover around Hermosa for those more into surfing or Jaco for those more into partying.  They are only 5 miles apart, so you can do both.  Anyway rovercam has archived photos, so check out all of Feb for last year.  A good surf camp there is www.jimhoganssurfcamp.com .. he was the world longboard champ in 95 and 96 and he really shows people a good time.
