How crowded is Pavones?« on: March 06 2008 17:03:00 »
Hitting Nosara from the 20-28, and thinking of taking a daytrip (by plane before anyone says its too far) with the 5 guys I'm going with to Pavones. Everyone is very experienced and knows how to surf a lineup. Is it worth the cost? Is the takeoff area super small, like Negra? Nosara gets great waves, but Pavones firing....
Help a brother out.

hi. i have been in pavones three times. the first time: 9 years ago. it was awesome. we were not more then 15 surfers in pavones. the second time 7 years ago. still ok. but they started to built new restaurants and houses.
the third time: 2 years ago. it was terrible. 80 people in the water and the wave wasnt even good, there are three take offs if there is no strong swell. it needs a strong swell to be famous pavones.

I v been in Pavones for a month, the thing with this point is that it needs an exact swell direction that will enter this gulf in order to work well, which means that for a long period of time it might have no waves at all or really bad surf - & you won't see a lot of surfers around. but if it gets a south swell ( about 165-180) than it gets one of the best rides of your life & thats when it will be really crowded but if the surf is good it can handle the big crowd (I was in the water with 80 other surfers & it is enough for everyone since the ride is very long & the surf is consistent) so the thing is when you are in costa rica you have to follow the forcast & talk to the pepople & if you hear that the south swell is coming just leave everything & go to pavones !!!

I am planning on heading down to Nosara in late-May and might be doing the same thing as you. I would like to hear your experience of the waves and crowds in both Nosara and Pavones when you return. Hope you are scoring some great surf.
