Good place to learn to surf in July« on: April 12 2008 17:04:00 »
I am looking to learn how to surf. I will be traveling somewhere in July and want to attend surf camp in the location. I was thinking about Costa Rica but I am nervous about the size of the waves and the weather. Does anyone have any suggestions for good places to learn to surf in July? I will be leaving from North East of US and am interested in going to the best possible place.
thanks a lot

I was down in Costa Rica last May, the surf is very good and consistent in July but can get too big if you're a beginner. Tamarindo is OK. The up side is that it doesn't get too big there and there's plenty of instructors to take you out. The downside is that I think Tamarindo is touristy and not that great a place to hang.

Here's some more info: Mal Pais/Santa Teresa is further down the Guanacaste Pennisula (same area as Tamarindo) on the southern end by Montezuma. It's an amazing area, hasn't blown up yet and super beautiful and cheap. It has a very chill surf scene and waves are very consistent there. There's surf schools and instructors there as well. Easily my favorite area of Costa Rica. The downside is if there's lots of swell then it will probably be too big down there to learn. You should probably check out both spots. You can fly or take a bus to both areas from San Jose, it's another 8 hour bus ride to get between two.

Tamarindo's not great, - Nossara PUMPING - Jako (HAKO) can be great fun and you can rent plenty of equipment in and around the beach ( plenty of smoke kicking around too ! ) I'd head there if I were you. Stay at a place called the poseidon, you'll find it in lonely planet...cheap cheap and QUALITY TUCKER!!! Travel around and check some of the other beaches. There's another spot close to Jako that when working can create some BIG quality waves!

Hey I came across you post. I am in the same situation this year and I am traveling late July! I know it was almost 5 years ago but where did you end up going? Would love your feedback. I was thinking Costa Rica but now I am also thinking of places like Ecuador or maybe Dominican Republic (may be too hot though)

Check out surfinnhermosa.com --Hermosa is a chill spot on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica --just far enough away from Jaco Beach and you will be able to access beginner breaks when it is too big in Hermosa.
