Surfing Cost Rica August to October« on: April 28 2010 11:04:00 »
Hi, I'm travelling through Central America from August to October, mostly going to be surfing Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Was hoping to find out what kind of swells, wave size and weather to expect then. Tropical storms blowing out the Carriban cost or picking up some nice waves? Pacific coast better?
Any info greatly appreciated!

For that time of year, Pacific coast will be more consistent, you will be lucky if you got waves on the carribean shores that time of year. It will get bigger later in the year, however When I was in Nicaragua in September a few years ago a three day swell hit peaking at a solid 12ft, and it was 4-6ft every other day, but I think this was a little out of ordinary. It is hurricane season in both the atlantic basin and pacific at that time of year, so anything is possible with storms. I imagine you will find average 2-4ft surf, with the occasional bigger swell. Good luck

Pacific coast is much more consistent in that period but if you are surfing Panama along the west side of the country, the drive to Bocas del Toro is not that long.
offthemapsurf.com offers tours with a local guide/surfer that can take you to the best secluded spots in the country and maximize on swell conditions.

Pacific Coast is much more consistent especially in Playa Hermosa on the Central Pacific Coast. Many breaks along this beach and more within 20 minutes driving distance. Playa Hermosa is super tranquilo too ....great place to spend a month surfing. For photos, check www.crsurfcam.com or www.papagsurf.com for forecasts or www.crsurf.com. This will give you good idea of consistency.
