Costa Rica Jan- April« on: October 07 2010 03:10:00 »
Hey, me and my friend are travelling from the UK to Costa Rica for three months in January. We want to find somewhere with mellow waves, cheap accomadation, cheap food and a good chilled atmosphere. Any advice would be great. We want to go somewhere cool where we can surf everyday and base ourselves for three months, so we can visit someother places during our stay. Any advice would be great. Peace x Becky x

Look for Lonely Planet's "Central America on a Shoestring" Very good book. And with 3 months you may decide to hit up some other countries too! Nicaragua has great surf as well and is cheaper.
My fave place is Jaco in CR. Has all the amendities you are used too without being huge. Tamarindo however was my least fave...good waves but most expensive surf town b/c it's the most popular....full of Americans. From Jaco you can travel down to Manuel Antonio and Domincial...also very nice. M.A. was my FAVE beach...for the actual beach part...it's the most picturesque. The book will helpo with places to stay, eat, etc and give you bus times.

Three months is plenty of time to see alot of the country. Check out the Central Pacific region --Playa Hermosa; just south of Jaco. See www.crsurfcam.com or www.papagsurf.com for good pics of the waves. Cheap accommodations, food and good vibes. ....and with the road paved down to Dominical now; it is easy to shoot down to Pavones when a swell comes along.
Santa Teresa is super cool and I would plan on spending some time over that way as well. Although, it can get pricey. Check out www.playasantateresa.com and www.crsurf.com for some good info on the area.
Another place to look at spending some time is up north: Playa Guiones, Nosara. Real chill and laid back. Definitely worth the trek. Check out www.surfingnosara.com and www.surfingcostarica.net

I couldn't Reccommend Santa Teresa more. It is on the pacific coast on the tip of the nicoya pennisula. I stayed their for 2 months learning how to surf. It is a very chilled atomosphere but lots of delicious cozy restaurants and a good night club if you feel like going out. I stayed at http://santateresa-beachfront.com/
They have bungalows right on the beach but also a range of different accomodation. check it out. Have a great holiday!

mal pais is the place to go. It has the most consistent wave in costa with a really chill attitude, good night life and great people. I am going down there for a month in november/december. I was there last year for a few days and cannot wait to get back down there. The mal pais surf camp was a great place to stay. Tamarindo is good for a weekend to party but doesn't have that relaxed attitude of mal pais. I wouldn't go to jaco ever again it was really sketchy at night (lots of drugs and hookers). For what you are looking for i would say mal pais is the best fit.

You should check out Santa Teresa. It is a small coastal town on the Nicoya Peninsula, it is about halfway between Manzanillo and Mal Pais. Super mellow surf town and great waves all along the coast.

Santa Teresa and Mal Pais for sure. Im actually going to be there at the end of january for a few months camping and hopefully surfing my brains out. Went there for a weekend when I was in CR last year and fell in love. Very mellow place. We were staying in Jaco and surfing there and Playa Hermosa. Hermosa is unbelievable too. Jaco was fun when smaller but mostly closeouts when it got bigger. I can't wait to get back to ST/MP. Might have to stop by Hermosa on the way though for a session or two. Peace.
