Travelling with surfboard, Guatemala -> Costa Rica?

« on: November 29 2005 12:11:00 »

I fly into Guatemala mid-January and fly out of Costa Rica in the beginning of March.  I have 6 weeks to explore the coast and see a few inland sites, and plan to bring 1 surfboard.  I plan to use the public buses to get around and I want to make stops El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  Does anyone have any comments/suggestions/advice about travelling with a board in these countries?  Would it be better to just buy a board when i get to the coast somewhere?  I still want to see a few things inland, sound like a huge hassle?  If anyone has travelled a similar route, overland on buses, I would appreciate any advice you can offer.  Thanks!

I don't know about travel within the countries, but I am certain that you will be able to bring your board on the "TICA" bus line, which provides service between central american countires (they've got a website)  (met some guys last year who'd gotten from Costa Rica to El Salvador no problemo).  Would also say that you'd have little trouble with most domestic buses in El Salvador - IF they aren't insanely crowded, which definetly happens.  Even then, it's doable.
