Summer Life in Costa Rica?

« on: April 28 2006 21:04:00 »

I plan on staying in CR from the beginning of July to mid August and traveling along the coast, alone. Can anyone tell me what to expect as far as crowds, tourists in Tamarindo, Mal Pais, Jaco, Hermosa? Is summer the dead season?

just got back from Malpais great town.  I'm not sure how much rain the summer will bring, but good luck.  Tranquillo is a fun hostel.

In Tamarindo it is dead during the rain season. iv been to costa rica 3 times, 2 times during the rain season.  if your a surfer its fun, but if your looking to party you should just go to San Jose.

Thanks for your comments. I'm also curious about the vibe of these small costal towns. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on which ones are the best and which ones are dumps. Is there really that much variation? I just want a place with the friendliest vibe. I'm used to trashy places. I spent last summer in Tagazhoute, Morocco and I'll be happy as long as the locals and travelers are cool.

Just got back from CR last week in April 2006.  There was a small swell on the Caribe side for a few days.  Salsa Brava has only one takeoff area so it got fairly crowded.  Locals have this place wired.  On the Pacific side, surfed Hermosa beachbreaks.  You can find empty peaks, but the best spots will be jammed with up to 60 surfers.
