How's Witches' Rock Surf Camp? Cool people/kind waves?« on: November 12 2006 13:11:00 »
I'm a beginner/intermediate surfer and want to find a new place to surf. I've been to Jaco a few times and the drugs and pollution get me down. Any ideas? I may stay in that spot for a few months. Oh, and I'm traveling solo so I want to be safe, too. Thanks a lot!

I was there last year and had a great time. The place is clean and the food is good. We surfed several places and they seemed to know where the waves were. Most of the guides are local and have local knowledge. I would go back again.

ya its cconvenient but the vibes not the same as it used to be, its definatley over priced.
the plus is the transport to the different breaks.
If you stay at the hostel in tamarindo for example, you can meet up with people haeding out to them and arrange stuff easily yourself and for cheaper and more importantly use local people directly so your money goes to helping them, not an american.

I'm alittle freaked Steph. I've been going to the same place in D.R. for 10 years. Some friends (we all travel, surf with the kids together) talked us into Jaco this year. The kids are two girls 10 yrs, two boys 13 yrs. old. Can we let them run free on the beach and in town. the four of them are rats and are used to roaming Las Teranas, D.R. on their own. They leave with their sticks in the A.M. and we typically dont see them till supper time in Teranas. Help me out here, first time in C.R.

theres always other options in costa rica besides tamarindo and jaco, which in my opinion, have become a little over-americanized...especially if you want to experience the real costa rica. try checking out some slighlty more remote spots, like mal pais/santa teresa, dominical, puerto viejo...all have a variety of wave conditions, great hostels to meet people, and some really good surf camps and locals who will be more than willing to help you out.

Don't worry about Jaco and little kids on the beach. They'll be fine. I'm saying that as a single woman the deal at night is a little shady in town and from what I hear from friends there's a lot of crime as far as houses being robbed etc. With you kids for vacation you're cool - sorry to scare you.
