Bring board or buy one?« on: September 13 2009 09:09:00 »
Heading to Costa Rica this winter for the first time. Spending 2-3 months. Wondering if it's a better idea to buy a board down there or bring one. Will not be renting a vehicle so I am curious about how difficult it will be getting a board around using public transportation.

buy one. Airlines are charging a fortune to carry them and you can get lots of new/used boards here.
plus...you might be able to sell it when you leave.

I'd take your own, but thats personal perference. There are a plethora of places to rent sticks down there, especially round Tamarindo, but you never know what you're gonna get. With such a lengthy trip planned, I think its worth having your own gun with you. I don't think boards are that cheap in CR from memory, and it'll allow you the freedom to go where you want when renting may hinder, and you can hit the ground and be in the water within hours instead of trawling the secondhand surf shops haggling over the price of a battered, overpriced 6'6" pin-tail. The cost of getting it on a plane wouldn't outweigh the cost once your there I would've thought.
As for public transport - piece of piss mate, and its half the fun!

Best of luck bro, hope you score some warm water perfection.

I just came from CR, the best if are spending more than 2 weeks will be to buy a board down there, prices on used boards are pretty fair (think about that to bring your board can cost between $100 and $150 if isnt dinged on plane) and there is a lot of good brands now, Costa Rica Surf Club in Tamarindo sales new Channel Islands, Firewire, JC, Bill Johnson etc and they have then also on the rental rack, so often you see good used boards for sale.
The board you buy can be re sale (like i did) fast and easy for 50% less wich is a good deal for a 2 months trip.
Have fun in CR! i cant wait to comeback

Definitely buy one. There are so many people that bring their boards and just leave them there. There are tons of places to buy new or used and then you don't have to worry about dragging it there, airport fees, transportation, etc.
