Juan, how are the waves around Cabarete in September?

I'll be in Puerto Plata for my honeymoon from Sep 6-13 and want to spend a couple of mornings learning to surf.  So I'll need to take lessons and rent a board.

I was wondering where would be good to take lessons and what the best way to get out to the surf spots would be?  Is there a bus which runs out of Puerto Plata, or should I rent a car/moped?

Also, how strong a swimmer should I be?  I do know how to swim, but I wouldn't really say that I'm a strong swimmer and I've never swam in the ocean before.

Looking forward to it!
