going to puerto plata in march« on: February 21 2006 11:02:00 »
I am traveling to puerto plata in march. I am an experienced surfer and am looking for nearby places to surf in puerto plata.I am only going for a few days but if the surf is good I will be returning in june for two weeks. (my girlfriend has no idea that this short vacation is really a recon mission for a surf trip for my buddies and i in june). so any recommendations on nearby places in puerto plata to surf would be great! THANKS!

Encuentro in Cabarete is not really close to Puerto Plata (about 20-30 min. drive), but definitely worth while to go to. Great waves there, good vibe, nice people and Cabarete is a great place. Maybe it is something for you to stay in june. If you need accommodation, you can always e-mail me for info. We live just a few minutes from Encuentro.

my trip got pushed back from march to april 4-7. I'm staying in cabarete. is like a beach break there where you can paddle out wherever, or is it like a few points up and down the beach with super crowds?

The prob with surfing right in Cabarete itself is the reef about 1/2 mile out catches the swell... It's a half moon bay with that reef out there taking the waves. Sometimes when it gets big out on the reef, some of the swell makes it to the beach but it's a pretty gnarly shorebreak that can be fun... You will want to take a moto-goncho to Equentro about 10-15 minutes west of Cabarete. It's one of the best breaks on the North shore of the Island and breaks good when it's small to medium swell... Have fun. The D.R. is a great place! Later, JD
