Please let me know how your trip was. I am heading over in January and have no idea where to surf. I am staying at the Sun Village resort in Puerto Plata. Let me know if you saw any good spots around this area or how far it is to get to a good place. Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

cheap places to stay in encuentro« Reply #5 on: December 29 2004 17:12:00 »
I'm heading to Cabarete and am curious if there are any places to stay out near the surf at encuentro instead of in the town of cabarete.
If not does anyone have advice on some dirt cheap rooms in the area?

I know the place very well. If you are in cabarette surf the area of encuentro in the early morn (there are about 8-10 breaks in the area depending on conditions)... after the wind kicks in get some cafe in cabarette and go to Rio san juan, here you will find the best waves on the Island un-crowded, perfect no wind, you can surf here until early eve (there are 6-8 breaks depending on the conditions). Preciosa!!! and If you can find it! go to LA PASA (fast very shallow take-off, long barrel and all wall... it is worth it! you may need a local to figure it out?)... The south has some good waves during the correct swells Pathos, Baorruco, La Barranca (If you can find them). enjoy because i wont be!!!

I am going to Puerto Plata and would like to know if it worth hauling my surf board? Is it easy to get to the surf spots? Is it easy to hitch with a board?
