Objective advice, please...what or who should I AVOID?« on: February 21 2007 23:02:00 »
I'm planning a March trip and am a surfing beginner.
Great forum--I see a lot of recommendations here that are helpful about where to surf and from whom to rent.
But what about scams/surf shops/hotels/beaches, etc..that I should AVOID.
Would appreciate from people who were paying customers at a DR establishment (as opposed to locals who run an establishment).

I am a beginner and stayed at Alis Surfcamp in Feb 2006. I can recommend staying at the surfcamp and the lessons that the instructors there offered. I have had lessons before so did not take it up this time, but other people got on really well with the instructors and made progress. The instructors were attentive and took very small groups. They also had a good range of boards to borrow too.
I do not have any tips on what to avoid, maybe we were lucky.
Hope you have a good time like us.

yeah..stay away fron the pro's...there rampant in the dr...and they would try anything to get you into paying for nothing...BEWARE!!!....but in general the local surfers are great guys...take a couple of mags and some extra wak and mabye an exrta leash or two too pass off and you'll be welcomed to some great dom rep surf hospitality...and also takl to you travel agent about the prices on gettin around the island..taxi's are pretty cheap but there's always the scammers that look at you as a tourist..and remember..thats what you are....respect the locals and their culture and you should be ok...and always be polite.
