Surf in Dominican in December (Staying at Iberostar)« on: October 31 2005 02:10:00 »
I will be in the Dominican staying at the Iberostar in Costa Dorada this December from the 26-January 3rd. If someone could tell me how large the surf is and what boards I should bring I would appreciate it and also if I could find out how far the best surfing destinations are in the area that would be good(La Preciosa, Encuentro, Playa Grande) Thanks for your time.

I'm gnona be staying at the Riu (next to the Iberostar....on Maimon Bay) the first week of December and would love to hear about any tips you may have. I was planning on taking the bus to Cabarete, renting a board and just surfing there for the day. Is that my best bet?

I'm going next week so I'll give you guys the heads up. Unfortunately looks like small swell for the area as it is warm on the northeast american shores and no signs of cold fronts coming off the coast. :-(

OK heres the deal there are no waves out front of the Iberostar resort the reef is not condusive for good breaks and they are situated in a bay. If you are not renting a car don't bring your stick. I traveled 1 day to sosua beach about 20 min. drive and it is a nice cove that always has offshores on the trade winds but needs a good swell, it did break when I was there and it was a hollow left. The best place to go would be in the Cabarete area or the surf camp maybe next time I will rent a car. Taxi to surf break cost about $50 US so each way it may be worth renting a vehicle. Crazy locos on mopeds without helmets are the only worry driving on the road just watch all around you as you don't want to hit one of them...
