We are considering the surf/Spanish school in Manta vs Mantanitas. We would be going in November and bringing our own boards. The question is - how big is the surf that time of year and is there any consistency to it? I've read about both tourism and localism in Mantanitas, but Manta seems like too much of a city. Does anyone have a recommendation? Our other choice is to go back to Costa Rica - we did enjoy it there, but the thought of someplace new is tempting.

I also visited both Manta and Montanita. I decided to stay in Manta and take a Spanish course there for 6 weeks, and i am very happy with my decision!!. The question in this case would be, which is your main goal: Spanish or surfing?. Manta has both: very good Spanish school and good surfing in nearby beaches.
