My wife and I are planning a trip to El Salvador in early April. I am a very experienced surfer (20 yrs) and my wife has been surfing for about 6 years and is comfortable surfing heavy waves. We are concerned that the lack of infrastructure and alleged heavy crime in Libertad (as well as 2001 Cholera outbeak in Libertad) makes the trip a little dicey. Any thoughts?

El Salvador can be extremely dangerous, however, there are some safe places to stay. In fact, at El Zonte, I slept outside in a hammock at the point and was never bothered. The country is very hot and dry but the waves are very consistent and can get huge. Easy cab ride from airport to La Libertad. Go straight to Punta Roca and then it's easy to find your way. Never go during Easter. Very crowded, otherwise, no-one.
Lock doors at night, buy a fan, don't walk around at night.
Always clean ears with a Q-tip and rubbibg alcohol after each surf session.
