As I may be too. Anyone know how it is to get around without going to a special surf camp? I've been to C.R. twice but I hear that La Libertad's a bit sketchy. -JJ SF, CA

I was down there last August. Me and my mate stayed in La Libertad for two days then hitched a ride out to El Zonte. We hitched out to K59 one day too. We never had any problems. The bus is cheap, but it is tough to get the boards on. That is why we hitched. El Zonte is a great place. International rules apply. Sunzal is another ok spot. It is a little mushy and there is a bit of paddleing involved. There are several good places to stay in El Zonte. A couple of the places are right in front of the break. Our favorite is across the river, Casa de Frida. The family that lives next to Casa de Frida are the greatest. She cooks up great papusas and beans every night, and it is real cheap. $4 US for beer and dinner.

I'll also be traveling solo end of July-August. Are the spots in La Libertad crowded during the week? If so, I may stay in the East. Would someone recommend a place to stay near El Cuco as well as any charter boats to Punta Mango (on a tight budget)?

Went 2 years ago... stayed at El Zonte at Saburu's place. Slice of paradise behind walls. Pool, palm trees, grass. Thatched roof huts... and a tower to check the surf. Outside of that are little family joints to eat at... picnic tables... with scrounchy dogs... typical third world poor beach town... nothing to do but relax and surf. Beautiful backdrops while surfing.
La Libertad was sketchy...
