Don't bother travelling up north mate. There is very good surf up there but the wind makes it far less consistant than Devon and Corwall (and even Wales!) To learn to surf you might aswel go straight for the Newquay area in Cornwall. Loads of top surf schools, loads of surf lodges hotels and B&Bs, and loads of cheap deals. Pick up a magazine like Carve or Wavelength from the UK and all the decent schools are advertised in the back.
The Reef surf School in Newquay offers a 3 day coarse with Bed and Breakfast accom (inc. boards and wetsuits etc..) for £49. I think thats off season but very cheap. Hope it helps.

Why not go to a cheap flight to Spain or Portugal as the autumn swells come?
youll get cleaner waves and less wind and it will be less money probably.
