Possible to surf near Nadi for free?« on: November 15 2005 17:11:00 »
I might be getting a trip to Fiji as a birthday present, and I'd like to surf while there. Is it possible to surf in Fiji near the bigger cities (Suva, Nadi) for free without hiring a boat? I don't need anything huge. Waves in Southern California have sucked lately. I'd be fine with 3-4ft beachbreak.
I'm an intermediate surfer (so no cloudbreak!)

'Sigatoka rivermouth' has a good beachbreak only a short drive from Nadi. It is only good early in the morning & gets windy by about 8am. The Coral Coast is also a medium drive from Nadi with a few reef breaks like "Hideaway Resort" that you can paddle to from shore. As for Suva it has an average wave that breaks near the harbour. If you think you will get swaying palmtrees, white sand & crystal water in Nadi & Suva, forget it, these 2 places are pretty ugly with brown sand & dirty water. You really need to get off the mainland & stay on fijis outer islands & get a boat. Its pure magic out there.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm planning a honeymoon trip in February and need to get some waves while there. Was thinking of staying in denarua but have also heard that it's a little boring with disappointing beaches. You suggested the smaller islands? ArE there any with 4-5 star hotels and convenient surf spots for an intermediate surfer, snorkeling and scuba ? Much appreciated !! Brad
