I stayed at Mana, they now have a boat that runs you out to Wilkes and there are few waves near by. Now the clarification.
To Surf around Mana the surf has to be huge for the waves to break.
The guy we got in touch with about surfing Mana is a guy called Dan. He is an upstanding gentleman. The guy who runs the boat and the guy who drives the boat are extremely dishonest. They will tell you Wilkes is good, and you get there it is flat and onshore. You learn this after you get to know the place. They cancelled the boat and if you have prepaid, charge you a cancellation fee.
Overall do not stay in Mana for surfing. Go to relax. Do not stay with Mana Lodge the boat providers. Stay in one of the other places.

Mate, I had a very similar problem. First up Dan is the man. Couldn't recommend him more highly. However Mana has no surf, the people who run the boat really do have no idea on surfing in general. I think they see surfers as dollars signs and forget that you need to provide the service. Then people recommend you and you get a good name. Not these guys. Anyway don't go to Mana for surfing and I wouldn't even use the guys from Mana lodge to get to Wilkes unless you can hone in a satelitte to work out what it is like before you get there.

Mana Lodge is an honest backpackers. we have a high reputation on the island. The information given to the surfers has proved to be unreliable. We the management of the lodge have taken steps to ensure that no information is misleading or misguiding. The surfing operation was a seperate company to the Mana lodge backpackers hostel. We no longer operate with the afore mentioned people. We apologise for any misunderstandings and thank our valued customers for pointing out any failings in the services we endeavour to provide. Subsequently surfing services have improved and all our current customers report that the surfing offered by Mana Lodge has improved greatly. We now operate our own surf comany which has a much higher standard than the services offered by previous partners.

As the last post stays Mana Lodge is a good place to stay If you want to get a more laid back Fijian feel this is the place. Food good, accommodation good. Needs a bar but heard they were building one.
However as far as the surfing goes some of the other posts are on the money. The owners canceled the boat and not the partners. The owners then charged a fee for them canceling the boat. The information was inaccurate. Note this is when the surf was at it's best.
What I suggest is going somewhere else for surfing. Stay at Yanuca and get some real waves.
