Has anyone stayed at the Funky Fish Resort, is it suited to surfers?

I stayed there in August and had a good time.  The owner Brad is and staff are really cool and it is fairly close to most of the breaks, but the only thing is they don't have a boat driver for the surf breaks on site.  You have to rely on a villager, but it wasn't too big of deal.  I stayed at Rendevous (which was really surfer oriented and a good time) and Waidroka (Don't waste your time, the south is pretty fickle with the frequent rain and wind).  Stick to the mamanucas and you will have a great trip.

Hey Ryan Could I get more info on the Funky Fish. Were there other surfers, how much was the boat trip, was it a backpacker party island, which breaks did you surf and how crowded were they? Cheers Dave

funky fish is the cheapest place to stay out in the mamanucas. there is nothing wrong with the mainland resorts but if there is no surf the beaches aren't the best. funky fish have awesome coral reefs to snorkel.  brad who owns funky fish is a great bloke and he will do his best to organise what you want to do. the boat driver is a local villager but if you give them notice about an early surf in the morn they will organise for the boat driver to be there. you can surf wilkes passage, desperations, and if you put your name on the list for cloudbreak/namotu saturday session you can get lucky and get a wave there while guest change over is happening. wilkes is a fun wave and can be surfed at all tides does have some good sections  and desperations is good when the other breaks are poo.

Just got back from Fiji earlier this week. I stayed at Plantation Island resort (Mololo Lai Lai) which is across the bay from Funky Fish. Small John and his cousin Joe run all the surfers to all the breaks and know all the right people (I hired a board from Namotu Isl). Both reliable but all work in Fiji time.....Small John's mobile number is: +67 99302262 contact him and he can discuss your options, sometimes the Funky Fish guys dropped off a guest to Plantation Isl in time for Small John to collect and take to break...Tell him Darren say's hi....
