Surfing in France in January???« on: November 04 2004 04:11:00 »
Hi there. Is there any decent surfing in France in January? I'm from England and am used to surfing year round in Cornwall, so am used to cold Atlantic water :0)
Having said that I'm still very much a beginner and don't know what the water will be like off the French coast at that time of year. I'm thinking of taking a week's holiday from December 26th and would like to do some surfing if possible.
I've heard about Biarritz obviously. Would it be any good in January?

There's a big chnce that the ocean will be out of control.
It's better to go to Potugal or south spain then.

Wel the SW tip of Portugal is good, since it picks up west and south swells, so pretty consistent there. For the water you will need a 4/3. Day time temp should be fine at 18-21 degrees.
Lagos or Sagres are good places to go to.

biarritz is awsome in January, most likely itll be too big if your a beginner, and maybe too crowded for your taste, and if there arent any waves or your done surfing, swim out to one of the two huge rocks in the water, jumping off them is really fun, water is kinda cold in january too
