Hossegor/France strategy

Hey all-
I'm planning a surf trip to Biarritz/Hossegor next June and am trying to pull together a game plan...
I think I'll be renting a flat in Hossegor- it seems like one of the cheaper options.  I'm hoping to be beachfront .. so my big question- does one need a car to go about surfing in Hossegor?  If you manage to locate yourself on the oceanfront, and near downtown, is it easy to walk to some breaks and shops and such?  I haven't figured out the range of the area and have gotten conflicting reports on the necessities of cars.  I'd love to avoid renting but then again, if it's going to cancel out too many surf opportunities, I'll go for it.
Also, along that vein, are there cheap-ish board rentals around?
MERCI! in advance.
And.. feel free to send an email over if you know of/have a nice little flat for 2!
