Anybody got any tales about early ESA contest moments?

RE: East Coast

I was only a kid, but watched from a snow covered beach, the Roger Williams College surf team beat the snot out of University of Rhody and other J.C.'s. The weather had just broken after a snowstorm, it was 50 and sunny, glassy 2-4' Narragansett Pier barrels. This was 1970 and the winner had a west coast twn-fin Lis and literally surfed circles around the competitors; unfortunately, this type of innovating board would not show up until 1974, G&S Summerfish. Peace

Notice all the champs from U.S. of A. from down south? Kelly, Hobgood's, etc. Yep- we like it all from Mason-Dixon south and the south is gonna do it again, rednecks, bible thumpers, grits, git ready! 1976 ESA Champ, J. Cartlan.

RE: East Coast

Maybe, the previous reader was at the wrong jetty, but, the ESA Championships in 1974 had New York's Mike Oppenheimer blowing the doors off the southern 'belles' Loehr, Cartland, Propper, etc.; Oppy did it with Bertleman cut-backs (since Flahrida waves were all beach break closeouts and they never learned to turn), while the southerners attempted to ride the 3' 'tubes'? at Hatteras (they had never been to Mmontauk or Ditch). The redneck responder also never heard of Dean Randazzo or Walt Phillips?

RE: East Coast

Tom, here's a clue: no more corduroy, no more madress, no more longboards; if you get too old to paddle, you should have the courtesy to paddle into the sunset......errgh, sunrise for eastern fags!

Tom still wears liesure suits from the 70's.  He had a crush on John Travolta for yrs until he found out that John was straight.  I betcha in his room, He's got a Saturday Night Fever poster on his wall.  Probably right next to his Brittney spears, and Hanna Montanna Posters.

RE: East Coast

Definitely performances by NY'er Rick Rasmussen, 73-78, who unfortunately on his many Bali trips got into the drug thang and wound up getting gunned down in his hometown in a deal gone bad......youngsters, take heed, fame is an expensive habit!
