surf in winter is it good for intermediate surfers on the south shore in winter if not where else could i go

By whose standards.  I'm not cutting you down or anything but in hawaii I'm considered an intermediate surfer (don't mean to brag but I surf 10-12 Pipe).  We just have higher standards here because of the surf.  In the winter town is mostly flat, but if you long board it's not that bad I guess, I don't know.

If you know where to look...(and I'm definatly not telling anyone) you'll find good wrap around swells from the north. I would say that they are surfable for a beginning short boarder but they're usually very shallow and sharp. The biggest problem a beginner is going to have is not the size of the waves but the fiercness of the people.
