In Hawaii, and you can't drive a car!!!!« on: December 16 2005 14:12:00 »
here's one for the textbooks: A surfer who doesn't know how to drive a car.
I'm travelling on my own and will be in the islands in April and May probably staying in Honolulu. According to the public transportation services it's not allowed to carry surfboards on the bus. What other means of transportation are there if you want to get around. Not just to the North Shore, but also to Makaha or Sandy.
Are there surf-carpool-opportunities, or do I have to learn it on the quick to check out the various spots?

Go ahead and get a rental car. Not knowing how to drive is a small impediment. Just remember, the brake is on the left side and you should not be able to see yourself in a properly adjusted rear view mirror.
Or, you could thumb it.

Thumbing could take a while. Honolulu is not "just down the street" from any of the spots you want to surf. I was on oahu recently and having a car was the way to go. Take a quick driving lesson from someone or better yet, get someone with driving experience to go with you and get a rental. Honolulu can be a trecherous driving experience for a visitor, especially at night if it's raining, during rush hour. A set of soft-racks can turn a small rental a good surf vehicle.

thanks for your reply, but isn't it impossible to rent a car without a licence? Driving a car is one thing I think that's the problem, but renting one without a licence
could be one.

Yes, you are right. My reply was a snap off-the-cuff answer. You could hire someone to guide you to the surf spots. Not a cheap date, but you get local knowledge working for you. There are surf tours and camps available for your use. Or you could learn to drive and get a license, you've got time for that. Best of luck, my friend.

get a good padded surf case and put your boards on the bus rack that the bus has on the front of the bus!
keep your eyes on those boards, sit at the front of the bus and make sure some bastard doesnt take off with them..
this should get you around oahu just fine..
