artificial reefs

I'm seaching for some information on artificial reefs and their benefits to the surfing community.  I have heard that there is an underwater breakwater in Alamuana Bay, Hawaii and I would like to know if this breakwater particularly improves the surfing conditions or if I have been mis-informed and it doesn't exist at all.

Also, does anyone know of any artificial reefs which have been succesful in improving surf conditions anywhere else in the world?

So far I have researched Cables, AUS and it apparently doesn't make a difference to the wave.

Have a look at for info on the Mount Maunganui reef here in NZ. I'm live on the South Coast of England where we have just got council approval for construction of our own reef. I've been travelling in NZ for a while and have talked to some surfers in the Mount Maunganui area; reports are positive so far!

Thanks Patrick!  Yeh, I live in Southampton at the moment so I know about the Bournemouth reef.  Feedback on it doesn't sound so good tho at the moment.  Will check out the website.

Nar... the Mount Reef is a peice of Shit.  The thing never worked properly and has started sinking into the seabed with a huge hole beside it.  No one surfs it, the only good thing its done is create some banks on the inside... though their not there any more!  Its a waste of rate-payers money (1.5 million!).... just glad i pay rent instead of watching my rates go to lining so guys pockets who came up with the idea in the first place!

The Mt Reef does not work at all in any surf condition. Don't go near the idea.
