Hawaii Hawaii

quality of rental boards, etc

I've been a surfing for around 25 yrs or so and am taking the wife who's basically a non-surfer to the south shore in August.  I've been to Hawaii before and enjoy the culture but prefer a bit less of the "tourist scene". However, her bro is coming back from a 2 yr tour in Iraq and I promised that when he got back we'd take the long trek to see him.

Enough of that... I saw that you can rent epoxy longsboards, shortboars for around 100/week on Oahu.  ANybody know the condition of these boards- they say they are in excellent shape.  Also, where's a good place to teach teh wife to surf and also a place that I can enjoy on my longboard and then maybe the shortboard when she gets tired? We're staying at the Marriot and have no idea where the breaks are in relation to the hotel- any advice would be greatly appreciated.
