Beginner surfing near Makaiwa Bay?

I'm a near beginner surfer and I'll be staying near the Fairmount and Mauna Lani Resort for the last week of April and first week of May.  I was wondering if there was a place to rent a board and catch some small waves without getting in the way.  Got hooked on surfing in Tamarindo Costa Rica last year and being landlocked in Idaho I don't get many chances to do this so I want to take advantage.  I see a couple of nice beaches right there at the resort but I don't know if there is any surf there.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Don't mind watching for awhile and taking my turn and I'm definately not ready for anything over three or possibly four feet.
